I am on Lvl 29 and haven' t seen the slightest glimpse of the crowns
I do not think it is for the hoipoloy, the rags and tags ... everyday man, you and me ...

Once you have bought shrines and leveled 50 dragons with that element to level 10, your shrine will become silver and you can level dragons of that specific element past level 10 and the dragons will get orbs above their heads. If you get 50 dragons with that element to level 15, your shrine will become gold and you can raise dragons to past level 15, once your dragon raised to level 20 the dragons will get crowns above their heads. The entire process is called "Shrine Grind"

To get a gold crown you need to have a shrine dedicated to a type of dragon (water,fire etc.). You must get 50 types of those dragons to level 10 and 15, once you do that you need to get another 50 dragons to level 20 and all the dragons at level 20 with that shrine will have a gold crown. The problem when doing this is that you need tons of food.

Suz needs a silver, really really bad, and Aries, well she will be content for a reindeer.

Huge congrats, I had not got that far with my reading catch up. When I went back and read your post I edited mine. I'm really excited for you.

I've decided to breed more gold Olympus to exchange a rainbow and leap year habitat. I also took out one treasure and traded it for Olympus. I've reached the magical 2 billion in coins, but I've not got any further than 3 gold crowns. It's probably time I spent some money on some serious treats!
