Can't download to someone else's iPad

With iTunes 10.5.3 open, I plugged in her iPad, switched it to manually manage music, dragged from iTunes onto her ipad in the left-hand pane, saw the little + sign, let go, and … nothing happened. No copying process at all. In iTunes' left-hand pane, the recording showed up as being on her iPad, but it was grayed out and couldn't be played. And when I looked on the iPad itself, the recording didn't show up at all, gray or not.

What should I have done to copy successfully to her iPad?

I don't think you have the latest version of tunes, see if there's an update, I'm sure it's 10.6 now.
