any advancement on wire network functionality?

I'm not interested in simple wireless solutions. As an IT professional I'd like to be able to take my ipad (or iphone) around to remote locations and plug it into a router/switch for simple ping testing, tracert, ect.

Just curious if anyone has a good work around. Sick of having to drag and balance a laptop at some locations.
