Am I missing something? (Besides a few brain cells) ripping DVD for iPad

I know I am not a technical person...
I want to copy some of the movies I already own. I do not have many.
I have a new iPad3.
I also have an HPMini. No slot for DVD in the Mini.
Wanting to rip my DVD, the iPad manual says to use 'handbrake'.
My great question is this....I am assuming I have to download the movie somehow to my HPMini somehow before I can use 'handbrake'? Download on a friends computer to a thumb-drive, then put it on my HP, then rip with handbrake, then to iPad?
Is there an easier way?
Simple terms, instructions please.
Thanks

IMHO the easiest way would be to get a cheap external DVD drive for your HP Mini, AmazonBasics have them at very good prices.
