Access to ap store & news stand when overseas

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can help. I have an iPad 2 purchased in Uk with a UK apple ID

I am at present in Portugal (Madeira) and can't access either the app store or download newsstand or other apps that I subscribe to (and pay for)

Is this just the way it is or have I set up something incorrectly?

I should have also said that I have wifi only.

I access the US app store from dozens of different countries. Not sure what problem your having.

My problem is that the app store Is blank save for the "loading" word and symbol with no result. On newsstand where a trial subscription has expired I get an infinite "downloading". I suspected that the store can't be accessed from outside the home country but from the last reply this isn't the case.
