iBooks, the app that comes with the iPad can display PDF files, I have a lot of my hardware manuals stored on my iPad. You have to import them through the iTunes Files tab on your computer, I've only had my iPad for a week and I'm still coming to grips with it, if/when you buy one google for transferring PDF to iPad or similar, that's how I found out how to do it.
