Will ipad ever support mkv hardware encoding?

    Maybe, someday.

    AppleTV does 4K, but the AppleTV is made to work with displays that can benifit from the greater resolution. There isn’t much benifit to running 4K video on an iPad screen. The opposite actually. You end up decoding a much larger file for basically the same display quality.

    Also, the 4K videos available for purchase or rent through iTunes can only be watched in 4K by streaming to a 4K display from an Apple TV. The sharpest version that you can download to any Apple device has a 1080p resolution.
