Very Newbie query - how to restore the status bar

    In Safari the info screen has a wide black border and no status bar. Can't find how to restore it despite searching forum and Dummies book. Its an iPad3 with iOS7,

    I couldn't understand what you mean. Could you please post a screenshot?

    TO POST A SCREENSHOT : Press and leave the home and power button simultaneously, you will hear the iPad taking a picture and the screen will flash.

    If Safari looks like this, then Private Browsing is turned on:

    To turn it off, tap the address/search bar, and tap "Private" on the keyboard.
    If you're facing a different problem, please provide more information, and, as abababababab said, post a screenshot if possible.
