I am running ios 5.1 on an iPad 1 (original iPad). Can I upgrade that uniut/system to IOS 5.1.1 at this time (October 2012) and if so where do I get the firmware?
I want to do this so I can do an untehethered jailbreak on those units. It is my understanding that I can not run IOS 6 on an iPad 1 - is that correct?

TIA

To get to the last question first, yes, iOS 5.1.1 is the highest you can go on an iPad1.

IMO, the easiest way to upgrade your iPad1 to iOS 5.1.1 is to connect it to iTunes, make a backup (just in case) and select the Upgrade button. iTunes should do its "magic" and then you should be on iOS 5.1.1.

Then, to jail break it, I would recommend using the redsn0w jail break tool, as mentioned in this tutorial: http://www.ipadforums.net/showthread.php?t=49435

The reason I recommend redsn0w is because your iPad1 probably has a lot of "stuff" on it and the other jail break tool, Absinthe, works best on iPads that are as close to a brand new, fresh-out-of-the-box condition.

So, try that and see how it works? Good luck and let us know how you get on.
