Unable to read on Ipad because of error messages

I received an Ipad for Christmas 2010 and I use it only to read either during stays at
hospital or when I am waiting for doctor's appointment but in the last 2 weeks I
have a huge problem, I am losing complete chapters and this because of an error
message. This is for new books purchased on Itunes and for books I received as
gifts from friends. some of the books I have read completely and now when I go
back I get the same error message telling me that there is an error in line 1 etc.
As anyone have the same problems could it be a virus????? I have done all the
updates, I have even done the recovery thingy and it's not helping.... HELP
