Rotation and Mute problem

Hi....I have become addicted to my iPad 2! The rotation and mute have never been a problem until recently, when it is
Acting crazy. It will not let me use both...I either have to check rotation or mute...
I want it so neither one has to be checked...I fall into the " mature age" of 83 and I cannot figure this out.
Can anybody help me? Please and thank you.

Do you mean that you don't want your ipad screen to rotate?If so then double tap and push that bar to right side then a circle will appear then tap over there it will set a lock on orientation.

Or do you want neither of them selected? You need to have 1 of these selected but i'm thinking you have activated the side switch inadvertently. Have a look if you can see orange where the switch is just above your sound toggle, then it is activated, just slide this up to turn it off.
