"Notes" Doesn't work

Hello, I've just bought an iPad 3 hours ago I'm not terribly computer literate but so far so good. Except, when I open up "Notes" the "+" icon is not highlighted and therefore I'm unable to add anything. Can anyone help explain what I need to do?

You will get the Notes without the + sign if it was already pushed, and you are in the active mode.
all you need to do is touch the screen and the keyboard should pop back up.

If you open the Notes touch the + and you pull down the keyboard - You get a clean yellow page with no + sign.
