My first ever ipad - ipad 4g with blue tooth keyboard

I am totally new as I have never had an apple, iphone of ipad and would like to get maximum out of it.

Why can't I send an sms via my sim card, that is through third parties? Is this an ipad limitation? I could do it on my note book but not now.
Which is the best ipad equivelant app to microsoft office?

I would never have thought that in this day & age there would be such a limitation. I wonder whether this is something that apple might reconsider as surely it does not effect their service.
