Movies on tv through ipad 4

Hi, I've copied my DVDs to my time capsule and am watching them back through my tv via my ipad. Unfortunately I can't find a way to fill the whole tv screen with the movie, it seems to be restricted to about 2/3 size in the centre of the screen. Any help much appreciated! For some reason when I watch movies I've purchased through iTunes it works fine and uses the whole screen.

Is it in widescreen format? That would explain the black bars at the top and bottom.
