Play iPad movie on TV

I paid for a movie in iTunes and downloaded it on to my iPad2. I then connected my iPad to my home TV using a connector and an HDMI cable. So far, so good. I could see my iPad screen on the TV and then tried to start the movie but the error message that came up said that I could not use the connected device to play a movie.

Now I may be new to this but why can't I use my TV to watch a movie from my iPad? Am I missing something?

I would appreciate some advice, please.

I believe that one of the issues with buying movies through iTunes is that the file is limited for use on devices with the same AppleID as it was bought with. This is all about DRM.

I did see a third party app note that it cannot Airplay iTunes DRM movies to an external device due to DRM. I would expect the exception would be an Apple TV, where the Apple TV is linked to the same AppleID.

Someone can correct me if I've made some wrong assumptions along the way.

I'm not certain either, however if you rented an iTune movie and downloaded it to your Mac/windows computer you can turn on home sharing on itunes and your AppleTV using the same apple ID to view the rental. I know it sometimes takes forever to download a movie from iTunes...it took about 40 minutes for me once and that was with a good wifi connection.

AirPlay mirroring from the iPad to the ATV is possible with shows though, from apps like ABC, PBS, etc. I did that quite a bit when I was hooked on Downton Abbey!

Anyways, from the iPad....I am not sure with a movie rental and whether or not you can view it on your tv. Maybe AirPlay will work for this as well?
