iPad in recovery mode. What can I do?

I plugged the iPad into my computer and iTunes stated I needed an update. 20 minutes later iTunes says the iPad is in recovery mode and I need to restore it. iTunes states I will lose all my data.
I'm guessing iTunes tried to install ios 8. I have a 16 gig model and have 1 gig of free space.
Can I undo what itunes did?
I do backup. What will I lose?
Are there any other options?
iPad is unusable. It has the cable and iTunes logo on screen. will not start up.
Man, am I Mad.

Hi, welcome to iPF!

If it's in recovery mode, here's what has to be done: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
You'll end up with the latest software, which is iOS 8.0.2.

You'll see in the instructions that you'll be able to restore from a backup afterwards, so if there's a recent backup, you won't lose anything.

iOS 8.0.2 is around 4 gb. I have 1 gb of free space. I'm thinking I'm going to lose something.

The software will need that amount for a short time during the update over the air, afaik. If you use iTunes, it should be different.
