It’s in the Settings app, in General - About - Model.
You can also find the model number (an A followed by 4 digits) on the back cover: Identify your iPad model

If you tap on the Model number line in Settings, it will switch back and forth from the M and A series numbers. The A series numbers are easier to look up on the internet, and the one Apple usually references in publications, ads, and press releases.

The number on the back of the device is hard to read. Good lighting and a magnifying glass are recommended. If you’ve got your iPhone handy, using the Camera app and zooming in should work.
