Live in Sydney, heading to the US for 10days & plan to buy an ipad.
Understand 4g is not a viable option here at the moment, but have been told can use 3g network........is this the case as I really don't understand all that lingo.
So what do I buy?
Have been told a wireless router bought in the US will not work in Aust.......?????????
Is a wireless modem & wireless router the same thing?
When in the US & not able to access internet thru WiFi, what sort of sim card do i buy?
Our provider here in Aust. is Optus.

Sorry for all the questions.my understanding of the above is very basic.

Thanks

If you then would require GPS function, then I recommend to take the 4g version as only iPad with 3G/4G/CDMA modem that have built in GPS chip receiver.

Hi, yes the 4G feature on the New iPad only works in US, but it is also correct you still can use it on any 3G (UMTS/WCDMA) networks in the world.
As for the wireless router, it's usually depending on the standards that are use on the router and devices (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, etc.).
The devices and the routers must at least support one of the same standard to make it work. The two common standards that are used in routers and devices now are 802.11g and 802.11n. With note that the current fastest and the latest standard is 802.11n and usually any routers/devices that can run in 802.11n also support 802.11g.
iPad, iPad2 and New iPad support (802.11a/b/g/n).

Wireless modem is not exactly the same with wireless router even though they have the same function (for internet connection).
Wireless modem is the term used usually if you are using Cellular Network/Carrier for the connection (3G, 4G, etc), wireless router if you are using WiFi.

For the sim card, I don't live in the US, but what I know Verizon have the largest 4G coverage now in the US. But Sprint and AT&T also provide 4G if I'm not mistaken.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Please be aware if you do buy one in the US it will come with their plug. Finding out the replacement cost of one of these for here would be a good idea or are you intending on using an adaptor? iPads are also available duty free at airports here in Oz so might be an idea to compare all the prices before making your decision on where to buy it.

A 3G/4G iPad comes with the GPS circuitry built into the iPad so an activated sim is not needed for it to work. I use mine often for this. You can buy a prepaid sim in the US but for this you will need to sign up for a plan, don't worry it can be cancelled almost straight away and you will only be charged for the month, I would suggest AT&T for this. Sim cards are available from US Apple stores for free and then you can get on the net and get your sim activated this way. There are many free wifi hotspots in the US though and most hotels will provide this service. Hope this helps.
