Where's the data?

I've searched and searched but can't find an answer although I know it must of been asked and answered so excuse the redundancy please...

Why is data backed up from apps like CNN and the like? I understand (I think) data being backed up from, say, a comic book app, Pandora (saved stations, right?) or photography app. But other apps that I have not put any data in to or customized has data backed up. Why is this?

All I can think of is maybe it's backing up your settings or preferences. Maybe even your login information (such as username). Or, even the fact that the particular app is downloaded to your specific iPad (like a registration).

Other than that, I've got no other idea. Sorry.
