What's new

What are you guys doing right NOW??? ;)

We loved Yosemite and wished we had had more time there......it is just so scenic and the trees are magnificent!

Oh yes....that is so true, we are but nothing! ;)

Hubby took an air tour with our 2 eldest......the pilot counted down to the rim and the earth just fell away! He was amazed by it all.

I don't like helicopters much and as our youngest didn't want to go, I chose to stay behind with her.

I would recommend the drive....you take in the Hoover dam which is really something to see but the landscape is just huge and absolutely stunning.

I would love to return! ;)

We took a plane ride over the Grand Canyon years ago and it was fun, but I wouldn't do it now, since reading about a good number of crashes having to do with (if I remember right) cross currents that can easily lead to fatalities.

Seeing it from air and from the ground are different experiences, though. From the air, the sense of scale is much more astounding. From the ground, you can take much closer and lengthier looks, without the plane noise, motion, distance and layer of glass/plexiglass or whatever that's between you and the view.

I really like going to all those western parks. I do take a simple digital camera with a good zoom and have taken some pictures I'm proud of. I agree that they don't capture the vastness of the landscape views, but nothing does. My sunset photos do remind me of what I saw at the Grand Canyon. My working cowboys, on horses, was taken on a long off-road trip. The best pictures are of flowers and wildlife.

There are so many amazing things to see in the US. I especially love the national parks. I'm not even an outdoorsy person, but I like to go and just gape, lol. I get an annual pass, so I just go now and then. There's also a huge variety in national parks -- historic and natural. For me, the best I've seen yet are Zion, Arches and Carlsbad Caverns. Gettysburg is pretty intense, too, if you get the history behind what happened and how things unfolded.

I would love to take some time to just explore the whole region......we all took many photos trying to capture it all, great photos but I agree nothing can capture the vastness!

A thrill for me was to see tumble weeds.....I'd only seen them in movies and was just fascinated by them. ;)

I take some landscape photos, but they seem flat and dull compared to the experience, which is why I go back, to renew that sense of awe. I do see some photos online that are pretty great -- clearly people who know what they're doing and took the effort to bring good gear, so they can capture some sense of the drama. When I want to look at photos of the places, those are way more compelling than mine, lol.

I love tumbleweeds, too. I told my husband that one of these days I'm going to stop the car, load a big tumbleweed and send it to someone as a gag gift.

So the weather was perfect at the Grand Canyon today. We stayed in Flagstaff overnite and drove about 1.5 hours to the canyon for sunrise. It was chilly but worth seeing, though I'd probably prefer to see sunset. We walked a bit of the South Rim while waiting for sunrise, and there were maybe two or three dozen other people doing likewise in our proximity. We saw a deer feeding about 15 feet down the slope from where we stood at one point.

On our way from hotel to the canyon, it was very dark because there was no moon, sun or lights. We saw three deer, including a huge one that we almost hit. That happens from time to time out there, I'm told.

We also had breakfast at the El Tovar hotel dining room, which I'd highly recommend. If you get there early enough, you can sit by the windows and have your meal with a view of the canyon.

So glad the weather was perfect for you.....it must have been just awesome to see the sunrise.

Glad you didn't hit that deer either, that would have been a show stopper. We saw quite a few deer and even a moose when we were there, well I think it was a moose!

I have to say I was a little taken aback with all the coins that people throw over the edge.....there were coins absolutely everywhere!

We tried to book at the El Tovar, they were booked out for our dates but we did stay within the Canyon area....can't remember now what it was called but it was the only place available for us.....just glad we got in there.

Where are you off to now?

@KayKayKay-- enjoying your travelogue very much. IMO the next best thing to being there is to hear it from someone who has recently been there:) What do you reckon would be the best time of the year to go there, not too hot not too cold?
