Ich habe ein bisschen Deutsche gelernt auf dem Gymnasium, aber ich habe viele vergessen.

My husband has been trying to learn Chinese for years. Every once in a while, someone compliments him on it, and he wails that he knows less than a young child, lol. Me, too, when it comes to German.

The Germans and Austrians I've come across generally have had very good English, though, yourself included.

I'd probably have a brain hemorrhage in the German forum, lol.

Well, we can bleed out together then. I've been frying my brains on and off in the French forum. I've been learning that language for 40 years and I'm still useless.

Believe me: you do know more than a young child.

The first foreign language we're learning here is English (mostly). I started when I was 11. Children now sometimes learn English in kindergarten, we teach it in primary school.
