What's new

What are you guys doing right NOW??? ;)

Yup, I'm looking forward to your lovely writing too? I find my male students have writing just as nice as the females.

So true. They hate it when you praise them, bless. My writing however is terrible. Years of scribbling fast at school and college made it scrawny. I take pride in my spelling and hate it when I get a word wrong. Spellchecker is a necessary pain.

My handwriting is terrible, for much the same reasons as Hayles. I even developed my own shorthand or speed writing system to keep up at school.

The worst thong is when you don't understand wot u rote! :D

At school I have to give a good example and write nice and clear. In private, sometimes I can't distinguish my m, n and u. I have a terrible signature. Johanna turns to Jolia-something undefinable-a.

LOL that's exactly like my handwriting, m, n, and u all look like very neat U's. Great to see the number of teachers here! Will have to be more careful now how I write ;)

I have loads of teacher colleagues whose writing and spelling is awful. I surreptitiously change the spelling when the kids aren't looking. We have a deal that I will nod or shake my head if it's wrong. Some of the teachers aren't shy about admitting they can't spell and just ask me out loud if its correct. The kids lap it up. They love it if you have a few problems of your own and then they don't feel so bad themselves. One of my teachers I, c, u, etc... All look the same so any word with those letters don't make any sense at all. The kids have learnt to ask me to rewrite it when needed. It's all good fun if the teacher has a sense of humour. If not? Well, the kids know it and pounce. I'm sure you will agree Johanna.

Oh and my writing on the smartboard or whiteboard goes back to pre college day writing. We teachers have to write clearly otherwise we have to write it again.

This is great to read. You sound like a great teacher who relates very well to children. What grade of schoolkids are you teaching? How large are classes?

We are "only" primary school teachers. The problem with spelling occurs rarely as we have to write clearly. But yes, a sense of good humor makes it all easier.

We just have ordinary blackboards.

Do you teach English at all in your classes Johanna? (your written English is so good I think many of us can benefit from it). I ask because when travelling through Austria, Germany etc. I found it's easy to get around and ask directions. Most young people speak very good English.

Right now, I've switched the fan oven on to heat up for roasting lamb, potatoes, carrots and turnips. Our niece and her family will be here for lunch, and to exchange belated birthday presents. We cannot trust the post now - at least 3 items went missing on the post over the past 4 months.

I've been sorting out our holiday papers. I printed off our final itinerary confirmation from Expedia, and a map showing shopping malls near our hotel. The touristy historical stuff should be well publicised at the hotel etc.

It will be great to escape the snow and cold next week :)

Of course we do. :-) From the moment the children join school they learn English, beginning with simple phrases. Some take additional lessons.

I am a Higher Level Teaching Assistant which means I take small groups (should be up to 12 students but I do cover supply as well which means up to 30). I teach those groups GCSE Science and recently BTEC Science Level 2. The students are mainly lower ability with special needs eg, dyslexia, autism, literacy and numeracy. I love my job but it can be stressful. I plan lessons with the teacher and we differentiate the lesson to their abilities. I find two minds are better than one. I have 14 years of experience with ages from 10/11 - 16 year olds. Loads of hormones, bad behaviour and swearing but I generally have a good rapport with them. You have to earn their respect, not just tell them what to do and expect them to listen. I also assist in the lesson with the teacher. It's called team teaching.

I'm having trouble at the moment as my main science teacher has left and I'm now in supply teacher hell which is very stressful for me and the kids. Some adults haven't quite got the idea that I'm useful and ignore my experience to their detriment. Kids can't cope with change and misbehave to make up for it. Any feedback whether positive or negative is good.

I love my job most of the time especially when I'm going on Easter holiday next week for two whole weeks!!! Lol.
