What's new

What are you guys doing right NOW??? ;)

Of course we do. :-) From the moment the children join school they learn English, beginning with simple phrases. Some take additional lessons.

Schools in many countries teach English from a young age, Japan is another example.

I am a Higher Level Teaching Assistant which means I take small groups (should be up to 12 students but I do cover supply as well which means up to 30). I teach those groups GCSE Science and recently BTEC Science Level 2. The students are mainly lower ability with special needs eg, dyslexia, autism, literacy and numeracy. I love my job but it can be stressful. I plan lessons with the teacher and we differentiate the lesson to their abilities. I find two minds are better than one. I have 14 years of experience with ages from 10/11 - 16 year olds. Loads of hormones, bad behaviour and swearing but I generally have a good rapport with them. You have to earn their respect, not just tell them what to do and expect them to listen. I also assist in the lesson with the teacher. It's called team teaching.

I'm having trouble at the moment as my main science teacher has left and I'm now in supply teacher hell which is very stressful for me and the kids. Some adults haven't quite got the idea that I'm useful and ignore my experience to their detriment. Kids can't cope with change and misbehave to make up for it. Any feedback whether positive or negative is good.

I love my job most of the time especially when I'm going on Easter holiday next week for two whole weeks!!! Lol.

That's a great read Hayley, thanks. Those kids are lucky indeed. Enjoy your obviously well-deserved break!

Coping with students who are lower ability is something I admire, especially at that age! You deserve your two week holidays!

Well I've got to get through next week first. Three days of teaching, one day of inset which is teacher training hell. Oops! I meant really useful and helpful. Lol.
Actually, I celebrate exactly 14 years with my school this Easter. Wow. The years fly by. They tried getting me to go for teacher training but I couldn't bear the thought of doing that. Yes, more money, yes, satisfaction but why? I love teaching small groups. Too many kids and it gets disruptive. I admire them but too many leave/retire due to stress. The common man seems to think its easy and loads of holidays but trust me, I've seen both sides of the fence and if you think teaching is a doddle, think again. Teenagers are no picnic. Those hormones would drive most people to drink. You have to be a saint and love your job to get through the paperwork the overlords think we need to do to satisfy their thirst for blood. Be a teacher?

Yes, we have five inset days a year and we go on courses if its applicable. I was a learning support assistant, then a science teaching assistant before I became a higher level teaching assistant. I've had to go back to college three times for various courses. To be honest with you, common sense, is really the only thing you need. I try not to read too much about the kids as I like to treat them the same as the others. Too many people try to spoil them and you are not doing them any favours if you do that. They have to live in the real world the same as us and there won't be anyone holding their hand when they do. When the kids are in primary school, they have 1:1. When they get to Secondary, they are on their own in a bigger school. Our school has always been good with curriculum support where the head teachers have helped with the budget.

The kids with autism usually have a topic which they adore and you have to seat them in the same seating plan. They can't deal with change, even to the point where they will take back their seat if someone else sits in it. There are loads more things but these are the basics. I've had Doctor Who fans, train fans, artistic fans etc...
