Roy Rob said:Incredible when you think a gallon of gas cost 50c in 1966 when I came to Canada, a pack of cigarettes cost the same. To compare today's cost you have to compare unit costs with your income. Example: As a mechanic I was making an average of $250/week so I could buy 500 gallons of gas with one weeks pay, so today with gas at say $ 1.28/ltr or $ 5.70/gal I would have to earn $5.70 x 500 = $ 2,848/week for gas to be the 'same' price today.
You can use the same formula to compare any price you wish, but a 500ml bottle of water at the convenience store for $1.00 still costs more than gasoline.
That's to complex for my time worn brain. $70 to drive for a week + $35 a week for parking + wear and tear + insurance = I'd sell my car if public transportation in Ottawa wasn't so retched.
Here's crazy BTW. I took VIA rail Ottawa - Toronto return last week. The discounted web fare was $88.00 all in!
