Hi, I'm new here.
I'm getting to know the iPad, it's great.
Can anyone help with a question please? I've been able to watch movies rented on the iPad on the tv using the apple AV HDMI adaptor, but the sound also goes through the tv. We normally have the sound going through a sound surround system. How could I get the sound from the iPad to go through the amp while the picture goes through the tv? Thanks if you can help.

Buy Apple TV and an HDMI cable. Then use the Air Play feature. I use it all the time to watch movies, videos and TV shows on my TV from my iPad.

How do I thumbs up this post. Tried using the AV adapter but really the Apple TV is a better solution to the whole issue. Apple TV only adds a marginal expense to the whole AV system you have in place.

I think they might have meant that the AppleTV doesn't ship with an HDMI cable, so you still need to buy one. But also agree, AppleTV is a fantastic add-on for the iPad. I use Air Video to stream non iTunes content (.mkv .avi etc) and it works a treat.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry to be a bit thick but could you explain a bit more please. I have not seen the Apple TV so am unsure what it does. Could it direct the picture to the tv but the sound to the amplifier in the sound surround system? Would one of them be by air play and one by cable?
To explain my system (set up by my son) I live in the UK, normally watch tv through a satellite receiver (Humax Foxsat), with the sound going through the amplifier, or blu ray through a blu ray player which is also connected to both the tv and the amplifier.
