Hopefully, the title says it all - we just want to be able to check in on our dog when we leave her home alone. We would use our ipad as the camera linked with a Windows 8 laptop which is based at my workplace. All the apps which seem to allow this need to ios devices, or so it appears. I'd really appreciate advice on whether we can achieve this using our hardware.

Try searching under Baby Monitor in the App Store. I seem to remember a few apps along that line. I can't remember if any of them were internet/remote capable. Make sure you check the iPhone apps as well as the iPad. While the interface won't be as nice on the iPad, most apps should still work.
