Upgrade 5.0.1 ==> 5.1.1 is it too late?

I feel iike I lost my train. I have an ipad2 (3G) running iOS 5.0.1, and I read apple stopped signing the iOS 5.1.1, on 9/22. Is there an alternate way to upgrade? Looks the battery life has been improved in the newest ver.....I won't upgrade to ios 6.

There is no other way as iTunes needs to verify with apple
