Transfer Photos to iPad 2

I have lots of pictures on my Mac that I have taken with my Nikon. When I try to drag one to my iPad in iTunes, a message pops up saying "img008.jpg cannot be played on this iPad"
Am I missing a step, is there another way to get my pictures transferred to my iPad.
Excuse the ignorance, I'm a little new at this.

Open iTunes, with iPad attached, go to photos and put a check mark by the folder(s) you want to copy to your iPad. Sync and they should be under photos on your iPad.

Thank you! I was trying to drag pictures from a folder. Now I got it.
