I'm looking at getting my son who's in college an iPad for Christmas but really struggling with which one he really needs. We hope he'll be able to get most of his textbooks on the iPad but worry about the amount of memory they will take up? I don't want to get one and it be obsolete quickly, by the same token, don't want to blow the bank on it either.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!!

Hi Tdhaddox - welcome to the forum! :)

First, not sure how many books your son will need to put on the iPad? The 32 GB option is certainly an intermediate choice, but if you can afford then go 2X?

Second, you need to determine which textbooks can be uploaded to the iPad whether at no cost or at a price - copyright issues may apply and textbooks may not even be available for the iPad (or other computer upload options?) - so you may need to figure out the possibilities first - good luck!

Books generally take up a relatively small amount of storage space......but assuming your son will eventually use it for a lot more than just books (a few videos, music, etc.) you wouldn't go far wrong with a 32GB iPad.

I purchased a nook for my textbooks instead of reading them with the nook pc reader. This year, they are no longer available through nook. That is why I now have an iPad2 32.

The two they use at my school are course smart and Vitalsource Bookshelf. CS is read online, but you can manually store them locally. VB stores them on the device. I have 1 VB stored, about 100 CD's, and a bunch of ebooks for leisure with plenty of room to spare.

Thanks to all of you-seems the 32g should be fine.

This forum is so incredibly helpful!
