To be honest, trying to use WinSCP or PuTTY intimidates me (especially PuTTY!!!). For future reference, you should use PuTTY when you need to type commands in and WinSCP when you need to manage files. So, WinSCP isn't really the program you wanted to use here.
However, I've discovered another program that I find to be much easier to use (for me ... YMMV). Instead of using either of the other two programs program to wirelessly SSH into my iPad, I use a Windows program (on my PC) called i-FunBox to access my iPad. It's a free download from the 'Net (latest version is v1.96.938.649). It does the same as both WinSCP and PuTTY (it even has a terminal part).
When you use this program, your iPad is connected to your PC but you don't do anything with it. All your actions and commands will be done on the PC. So, you'll be changing the iPad's password on the PC... And yes, changing the password is necessary if you have OpenSSH installed as most anyone knows the default password.
After you've downloaded and installed i-FunBox on your PC, connect the iPad to the PC with the regular USB cord (have iTunes closed). Then, open the program. It should come up and show like the attached picture:

In the left column, you'll see the line "SSH Terminal." Click on it and It should open right up for you (the default password is known by and used by this program). You'll see a terminal screen on the right side.
To change your passwords (I'd recommend using the same one for both), do these two commands (ensure you put your cursor in the line I've outlined (#2):
(1) Type "passwd" [don't use the quotes - then press Return/Enter on your computer]
(1a) Retype your password per the prompt (note that you won't see the letters appear)
(2) Type "passwd mobile" [again, no quotes and press Return/Enter on your PC]
(2a) Again, retype your password per the prompt
That's it. You have successfully changed both the root and mobile passwords on your iPad. let us know how you get on.
