I see you can lock the rotation using the button revealed by an upward swipe.

Yes. The physical orientation lock switch went away, with the iPad Air if I remember correctly.

If you are looking at the iPad User Guide, make sure you have the most recent version (or the iOS version you're running). There should be a picture for every iPad model that will run that version. You can find it in the iBooks store (since the online guide only supports the newest iOS version).

The iPad Air (1st generation) still has the side switch. It disappeared with the Air 2.
