there are a growing number of apps that won't run on anything lower than iOS 7 or 8, which means that the apps will, in some cases, no longer run on devices running older iOS versions.

My iPad 4, which I'm using to post this message, is running the latest version of iOS 8 with no problems. Some of the earlier versions of iOS 8 had problems but iOS 8.3 is working well on most devices.

Ok thanks I will update
BTW, since you're currently on iOS 6.1, it's quite a big update to go all the way to iOS 8.4. You should do the update through iTunes on your computer, not OTA. Also, the whole look of iOS has changed since you've last updated, be prepared for something that looks quite different.

For example, here's my homescreen.

Tap the double square in the top right corner then you can tap the x to close out the web page.

iOS 8.3 is quite buggy so watch out.
My experience has been somewhat different. I have been using iOS devices since the iPhone 4S was released and I've seen one crash, in iOS 7, and no problems at all with iOS 8.x thus far.

My iOS collection consists of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPad 4, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 2, iPod Touch (5th gen), and I've seen no recent problems with any of them.
