Access the forum via the website, select User CP from top row of tabs, then in new page select Edit Avatar (as this is probably what you really want to do) on the left side of the page then follow the onscreen instructions.

It worked perfectly. I keep trying to do it through my iPad...wrong!
I needed to do it on the website through my computer.
