new to this forum and new to the ios

hello all. i am a n00b when it comes to the ios. the last time i touched anything apple related was a macintosh with mac os7 on it. (yes i know it has been a long time lol) my girlfriend recently aquired an ipad. it has ios5.1 and i was wondering is there any way to do an un tethered jailbreak? i have been doing some reading and cant find anything but tethered. also what are the major advantages to jailbreaking. be easy im an android guy trying to learn the apple stuff so i have a basic concept of what it is allready.

Unless you have an iPad1, there is no jail break on iOS 5.1, tethered or untethered. And, for the iPad1 - the only jail break available is a tethered one.

Then, it you want more, may I suggest you grab a beverage and a snack and have a browse through the rest of the stickies and tutorials in the Hacking forum. I say to grab a snack cause there's a lot there!
