Hi all, do I need 3G access in combination with GPS to use maps on the IPad? And if so, why? Tom Tom is only using GPS, isn't it?

It depends some apps (like Tom Tom) have all the maps onboard the iPad others download them as required.

Just to be clear, you don't need 3G access as the previous poster suggested but you do need a 3G iPad because there is no GPS chipset fitted to a non-3G iPad.

You can use navigation software with just a wifi iPad (no 3G) with one of these
BlueNEXT BN-901S Bluetooth GPS Receiver | eBay

You will also need Roqybt4 from Cydia to connect your ipad to the unit.I used this myself on my previous iPad 1 wifi. It does work very well.
