Moving between apps

It annoys me when I am in the middle of one app but need to use another app that I always have to hit the home button, open the new app, do what I need and then hit home and reopen the first app. Is there anyway to switch between apps without having to close them?

If you have your iPad running the newest OS then just double click the home button.
