Hi Margaret - welcome to the forum! 
I'm in the USA, so not sure about the ISP you are using nor which mail accounts you have setup in the native Mail app on the iPad - so, please provide some more specifics - the iPad mail app will simply 'mirror' the data from your email account servers, so the iPad is not really the issue relative to security - you might want to better explain what you mean by 'hacked' - hopefully w/ the additional information, a better response can be offered. As Dave says above, a little more info will help us to help you.
There is lots of good advice and info on here plus plenty of members all too willing to help with any problems.
Remember, search is your friend.
