I've got the same problem with crashes of the map app. My solution was very simple and fast. The problem seems to be problems with the contact list. So here's my solution!
1. Connect to iTunes
2. Sync your iPad
3. go to the Info Tab in your iTunes iPad Device part (don't know how to describe it better;-()
4. check the cross under Advanced: "Replace contacts on this iPad"
5. check "Apply"
After this everything is working for me.
(Sorry, I'm using my system in german, so maybe my backtranslations in english are not correct!)
