Mail-picking up OLD emails

My Mail program is currently picking up emails from last Jan and beyond. The more I delete the more it goes and picks up some more. These emails have been deleted off the server for months but I must confess they are sitting on my Mac.

What can I do to stop this annoying loading of old emails.
