Load an app that can read/view those files AND sync with iCloud. The ones I find that work best with iCloud are the iWork apps [Keynote (for PowerPoint files), Numbers (for Excel) and Pages(for Word)].
Then, in Settings, you'll need to turn on the sharing documents function for iCloud. To do, open the iCloud tab (in your Settings app) and make sure the "Documents and Data" function is ON for the app you wish to use. Like so:
Then, hopefully, you'll be able to see the file(s) once you open the app. At least, the file I put into the iCloud for the Keynote app appeared when I opened Keynote.
thanks for your suggestions. I finally had to restore from iCloud from the last backup. It restored all of my "lost" documents! i really appreciate you responding so quickly to my question.
