I have an iPad 3 and the volume has been going out on the external speakers recently. Like ill be playing music then go and try and open a app and all of a sudden the volume is gone. I p,uh the head phones in and it has sound then I unplug them then no sound. And on the volume slider on the music app the button disappears as well. I tried the side mute switch soft reset powering down then turning it back on to no avail. The first time it happened it jus came back on suddenly and second time I went to restore it an when I plugged it into the computer it cam back on.do you have any idea what's causing this?

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Some speakers and headphones have their own muting function....check to make sure you haven't activated this. Also when listening to music with speakers or headphones, the music needs to be stopped first before pulling out the jack.....otherwise this may mute your sound.

Have a look in the headphone jack area to see if any debris has been pushed down in here by the jack.....don't go sticking anything in here but you can apply a vacuum to clear any obstruction. Spraying canned air can also help to displace any obstruction.

Let us know if any of these suggestions help with your issue.

No, I don't have screen lag when doing the 4 finger swipe between apps, but whenever I do have a problem with my iPad, I do a reset. I notice sometimes after I have muted my iPad and then unmute that I need to just tap the sound up button to get the sound to work again, otherwise I've never had an issue with my sound.

Have you checked the sound slide which is reached through your multi task bar.....do the four finger swipe up to reveal this and then swipe to the right....is this how it should be?

Have you tried a reset of your iPad? You say you have powered down, which I take it is a restart, so try a reset and see if this makes a difference.

Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you may see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start.
