Dave, thank you for answering all of my questions. My curiosity can be tiresome to some people. I love your brand, I suppose you designed that as well? What is the most favourite ( to you ) project you have ever done in wood? Are you self taught or did you apprentice or something else? You sure are good at what you do with wood! I collect small boxes from all over the world. They fit in the palm of my hand ( or my outstretched hand ). The ones made of wood are my favourite, especially the ones with different coloured wood making an organic pattern. ;-)
Hi again
Squib - concerning the branding iron, the top part was an ordering option (I picked the simpler choice), so all that I added was
Doctor Dave (this had to be made to order so took several weeks before arrival) - I'm now retired, but was a medical physician (University of Michigan Medical School, 1971) and spent 34 years as an Academic Radiologist at Wake Forest University in North Carolina - there I was sub-specialized in 'Abdominal Radiology', so taught, examined patients, and did research related to that area - SO, that is what I did for most of my adult life.
BUT, I have many other interests (many described in my profile), including woodworking - I'm an amateur but quite experienced in certain areas - this is a LARGE area to explore (e.g. I do not do wood turning - own a bunch of stuff that I've bought but just another 'world'); so you're right, I am pretty much 'self taught' although when I grew up in northern Ohio/southern Michigan, my father built a house in the latter location - I was a young teenager then and had to help in this MAJOR project, so learned a lot about basic house building and was also called upon to do a lot of 'finish' carpentry (of course, learned 'on the job') - SO, I love being creative - nothing fascinates more than taking a 'pile of wood' (i.e. good hardwood in particular) and coming up w/ a concept and then converting that into a needed project, such as the lectern built - e.g. all of the wood for the project was just scrap laying around my shop (EXCEPT for the veneered walnut top - had to order that and not cheap BUT donated to the fellowship).
OOPS, this post is getting TOO long but let me know if you really want to see some of my other projects - I have plenty of PICS! P.S. I'm a long term member of the Woodnet Forum and have been posting there for years -
Dave
