116th US Open Starts Today - Second Golf Major of the Year - at Oakmont Country Club

Opened in 1903, Oakmont Country Club has hosted more major championships (8 US Opens) than any other course in the USA. The course is arguably the most difficult in the North America w/ 210 deep bunkers and difficult greens; the fairways are narrow and require constant precision; trees and water are non-existent, so truly a ‘links style’ golf course. Its length is 7,219 yards at par 70 - an under-par winning score is not expected; but at the 1973 US Open there, Johnny Miller shot a final round 63 to win the major tournament, so surprises can occur especially w/ the depth of talent on the PGA tour.

Below a map showing the location of Oakmont Country Club northeast of Pittsburgh, PA - the Allegheny River is close by (but does not come into play); interestingly, the Pennsylvania Turnpike splits the course nearly in half (on the aerial view below, holes 2-8 are to the right; 1 & 9-18 to the left) - notice the paucity of trees along the fairways and the numerous sand traps!

In 1971, I graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School; Susan & I then drove from Ann Arbor, MI, through Pennsylvania on the turnpike - so I drove through the Oakmont golf course likely at night w/o realizing where the course was located - we did an overnight in PA, then onto Susan's parent's house in Short Hills, New Jersey - did a 3-week trip to Italy (a graduation present from her parents) - then a long drive down to Winston-Salem, NC to start my medical internship followed by my radiology residency. Dave :)

SO - for golf fans in the forum - this should be a 'tough test' at Oakmont!

For those who may be viewing my thread on my home town, i.e. Winston-Salem - in previewing web images to post, I found the one below showing Salem College & Home Moravian Church (pics of which I've posted in my thread) - this one is almost like a watercolor painting - a winter snow (not common here) highlighting the red bricks - Dave :)

Through the weekend, I've been watching the US Open Golf Championship (the second Major of the year in that sport) - the tournament is being held at the famous Oakmont Country Club (near Pittsburgh, PA) - I posted earlier in this thread.

Just a few minutes ago, Justin Johnson won the 116th US Open w/ a phenomenal score of -4 under par - only a handful of others were under par - the course was a real BITCH, as was expected! Of those making the 2-day cut, the last golfer came in at 24 OVER PAR! Now, these are professionals.

Below a pic of Justin w/ Paulina Gretzky, daughter of the famous hockey great, Wayne Gretzky - a sports dynasty being born? - :) Dave
