Wow, what a beauty! Did you study to learn those names or did you just look it up because you wanted to know? I forget what a butterfly person is called...lepi-- something?

Thanks for posting! I LOVE butterflies, especially the colourful one's like you found . :)
Why thank you Richard, for noticing and making a note of it! I borrowed it from Moonlit Sonata who I hope doesn't mind.

Is Lepidopterologist a word? No, I'm an amateur ornithologist specializing in hummingbirds, but I'm interested in all sorts of stuff. I just look up things I want to know, and occasionally remember them. :) Recently, I decided I should learn the differences between those two butterfly species; some female Tiger Swallowtails are black instead of yellow (I have no idea why) and look a lot like the Spicebush. If I see one in my backyard, I'll try to grab a photo and add it to my collection here. Pay attention, this could be on the final...

That's the word I was thinking of! What is the difference between an amateur and a professional ornithologist? Thanks, Diane

Try lepidopterist. A person who studies butterflies.

Sent from my iPad using iPF

Thanks, it is a weird word. On the other hand I find that most scientific names for what people do weird. They must be of Latin originally! Yes, I know there is a word for that too! Only THIS time I KNOW the word..I hope? Etymologist?

It's amazing to see what can be used for this purpose!

Those photo's are a collage put together by the photographer, right?
I wonder where he got them all from or just took a picture here or there and then made the collage? What do you think? JA, Anyone......?

If you follow the link to his website, you can see them one by one.
I guess he found each one by chance and was lucky enough to take a picture.

What has always amazed my is how they (artists, photographers ) can take itty bitty ( that weren't itty bitty when shot) and then they make amazing portraits of famous people. I am pretty sure every photo is of the person whose portrait is done. Well, there might be some, family, pet or special venues, but I am pretty sure the end person is in every shot even if with other people!
I heard this amazing story yesterday about two guys who had to come up with a better version of the food containers we are used to!
These two guys are multi-,millionaires now! They created a jar that pushes up from the bottom. I am having déjà vu here! Did I already tell you about this? If so, stop reading ! If not read it, it is very cool!
So instead of trying to scrape the bottom of the peanut jar, soon you will be able to turn the bottom and the peanut butter comes to you! HOW COOL IS THAT??? They will work like deodorant sticks, etc. I am wondering if they will be able to make one for honey ?
How will they stop the ooze? Diane/squib

I haven't heard this before. A very useful invention!

Peanut butter isn't common here, but I know a few other occasions where I'd have needed this!

A professional has a degree in the subject, probably a Ph.D. If he expects to be paid. I learned just enough on my own to satisfy my interests, such as my bird banding hobby, my hummingbird website, and my volunteer educational pursuits. I suppose the proper term for me is "field ornithologist."

BTW, an etymologist studies the origins of words. An entomologist studies bugs. :)

Gosh one letter and I am all mixed up! You are right, that is the word I was looking for! I love people ( like you ) who have a thirst for the knowledge that interests them rather than racking up credits! You are my hero for the day! Thanks so much!

And thanks for the :) at the end!

Here are some orchids from the garden centre at work. <img src="http://www.ipadforums.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=46603"/> <img src="http://www.ipadforums.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=46606"/>

WOW!!! Those are absolutely gorgeous ! Why do you have a garden center where you work? Is it for relaxation or for people to buy or something else? They are really magnificent ! Now if only a butterfly would come along, land on an orchid - how awesome that would be!
