How long should a complete reset take?

I wanted to completely clean up my iPad so I started the erase/reset process. I have gotten as far as a black screen with a tiny circling circle of dots. It has been over a half hour and I wonder if this is usual. Anyone know? Should I just wait or try something? If so, what? Thanks for anyone's help!

I gave up after another 20 minutes and am now doing the reset via iTunes. Shoulda done my homework first!
