OK so you are resigned to transferring Docs to the iPad via email.
Google made that easier yesterday if you are using the web interface to compose email. On the Mac all you have to do is place your browser window on one side of he screen and your Documents window on the other. Just select your documents and drag them over to the new email and drop them between the address bar and the body of the message.
Viola - Google will grab the files and transfer them to your message. Hit send and you are good to go.
I created a special email account (7GB more storage) just for moving files on and off the iPad.
You can create as many Gmail accounts as you like with Google. I have over a dozen which serve me well.
The archival service of GMail automatically stores my files in the Cloud.
