I have a pair of nioce canceling headphones and a pair of regular earbuds. Neither are apple brand and when I try to put them in the iPad they fit loosely and the sound still comes out of the external speaker. Do I need to buy a special adapter or special headphones. If so, do you have any suggestions for affordable ones. I saw some 2$ adapters online that say for 3.5mm to iPad. Would this be the correct one?
Thanks

Try to push them in a little harder.
I noticed that the earphone-socket on the iPad is very much tighter than usual.
Even if it seems as though the plug is in, there's just a tiny bit missing.
If you give it another push, it will click and sit really tight.

Sure does fit pretty snug, I have to push the plug in with more force than other devices that I use the same headphones in.

My inCase iPad holder is also made with a strip of leather that covers some of teh hole, I have to push my iPad further into the holder to allow me to plug in properly.
