Your boat has not arrived yet, if in my case, I start making them or looking in newspapers, friends' & followers' stands, then when boat arrives and I still lack of them, I open crates for help, then last resort ask to buy from friends for the remaining that I can't make in time (still a long 16 hrs).

Ppl in here might already know, open your crates (up to 3) for help won't reduce your boatleader score award (but increase a few instead since you finish the boat quicker, every hour you wait, 1 point is less from the bonus). What you miss for that 3 crates is exp and coins, but not that much as you sell at school board.

tap on the crate you want help on it, on the right side near the bottom show "ask for help", tap on it, now the crate will have a dancing exclamation mark. Fill the other crates first while waiting for help on that crate. You can only ask for help on 3 crates. Ppl who help will get those exp and coins plus 1 to 2 scores for those crates. That is a win win thing to do. Choose crates with items you don't have at that moment, or do have but will be wiped out after the boat (use them if no one help within the 1st hour)
