Gmail problems

I searched the forum and saw the same problem but could not find an answer, I might have missed it but I'm posting it anyway:
I have a gmail account that was working very well in both my Ipad mail and my macbook pro. Recently it doesn't work any or works on and off, while it is still working perfectly when I access it via gmail.com. The error message I get on the Ipad says: "Cannot get mail. The user name or the password for google mail is incorrect."
I know both my user name and password are correct as I'm using them to access my mail via gmail.com, therefore it seems to be a problem with the Ipad and more generaly with apple products ?
What do I need to do to make it work again ?

Sometimes, the iPad e-mail accounts just develop glitches. May I suggest that you delete the account from the iPad, then reload it (all via the Settings app). You won't lose anything, given that the iPad account is a mirror of the web Gmail account. But, it might helps?

I had the same problem and had to create an Application Specific password in GMail's Settings for 2-Step Verification.

It then worked a treat.

Marilyn is correct. My gmail did not like password which was correct. Spent an hour on the phone with apple. Solution was to delete gmail thru settings. Setup an exchange email. Then we deleted that and tried setting up gmail again with the same problem. Finally set up a new password for gmail and it started working. Also my iPhone was having the same problem so did the same thing and it began working.
