Dragonvale Tips & Tricks! (NO Friend Requests!)

Got my second sun with the famous love/cold combo :-) I also tried my new Panlong w/love, got a crystal :-( But, now two suns, two moons, panlong and rainbow - feels pretty great! :-)

Good morning to all on the east coast of US, and good day everyone else.

I just did a calculation that yielded what I find to be interesting results. As many of you know, a common practice in business when making an infrastructure investment is to calculate the ROI (Return On Investment). Of particular interest is how long it takes to recoup your investment.

I have always more or less blindly leveled all my dragons to 15, especially those in production. I just noticed that one of the Bluefires in my Cold habitat was at level 14. I was getting ready to level it up to 15 as usual and I wondered if it was worth it. I don't need it as I already have Cold and Fire gold shrines, so the only apparent concrete benefit is to increase its gold coin production. Here are the numbers:

0 Current production at level 14 = 211/minute
0 Production at level 15 = 232/minute
0 Production gain = 21/minute
0 Cost to level up in treats = 163,840
0 Cost to level up in gold coins (using high volume treat purchase) = $8,192,000
---------------------
To break even and recover your cost requires:
0 395,095 minutes
0 6,502 hours
0 271 days

Since I'm only buying small size tubes of toothpaste these days, that seems like a long time to wait to get my money back. My conclusion? No more blindly leveling up dragons unless it's for a specific goal, such as earning a gold shrine or somesuch. It's not worth it to me to wait 271 days to start capturing a benefit from the expense - I'd rather keep the gold coins.

I will point out that you're talking about optimal earnings here, meaning there can never be a time that the habitat is filled and precious minutes are being wasted. The actuality is that you can probably double the number of days required to recoup your investment.

You've raised an interesting point about investment and return. I mean the only point to get a Gold Shrine (apart from the achievement, and the very exclusive Decoration, which are obviously an intrinsic part of getting a Gold Shrine) is so that you can raise dragons to a higher level and earn more with them. You point out that the reward is not worth the outlay, and going for a Gold Shrine can never be about the financial return.

So let's look at going for silver. The cost of feeding a dragon to Level 10 compared to it's increase in earnings. I'm going to do fully boosted Quake and Bluefire, and round off treats to be 10 000 required to level them up, just for the ease of maths, meaning 500 000 coins is required to level up a dragon.

Quake - Level 1 - 13 coins (9 coins double boosted with Earth and Lightning Boosts)
- Level 10 - 85 coins (59 coins double boosted)
- an increase of 72 coins a minute
- 6944.44 minutes required
- 115.74 hours
- 4.8 days to recoup investment

Blue/Frostfire - Level 1 - 24 coins (20 coins boosted by cold)
- Level 10 - 156 coins (130 coins boosted by cold)
- an increase of 132 coins a minute.
- 3787.878 minutes
- 63.13 hours
- 2.63 days

Interesting ...

Rainbow has an increase of 340 coins a minute, meaning he only needs 1470.58 minutes, 24.5 hours or just over a day. And because of the "size" of his habitat you don't need to worry about constantly emptying it. He holds more than the 500 000 needed to level him up.

For the dragons that can be leveled up beyond level 10, there is bound to be an optimal level to feed them to. The point where earnings are maximised according to the coin spent on food. And it must be different for each dragon based on it's earning potential. Surely there's some math geeks here that could work out the formula?

Ok you two (poppy and fletch ) thank u very much... I was trying to take my plant and fire to gold before I started on any other shrine... But it is very very flow going.... Should I just stop and get all mine to silver or is it really worth it to keep going to gold with fire and plant???? Your numbers are really killing me.. And the time it takes to get one to 15 is crazy... Help!!!!!

Today a new prince or princess are born in Sweden, our CrownPrinsess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel will have their first baby! This baby will eventually become the king or queen of Sweden!

The best thing to celebrate the event would be to get the gold dragon, or that everyone gets at least one dragon with a crown on, for free!

Ooh! I forgot she was due this month :) let us know what she has :D

It is a new princess! We will not have a King for very very long time (you can marry to be a Queen, but not king).

So, where is the golden dragon?

Yay! Is it like in denmark where the name of the prince or princess isnt released until the christening?

The upshot is, you're doing it to have the decoration, not to make money. But again, the point of the game is not to make money. It's to have fun, in what ever way works for you. There is no "end" ... no ultimate baddy to defeat, no ultimate goal to conquer. This game is about the journey, not the destination. If you will enjoy having the pretty gold shrines then by all means go for it. If you want to look at a park full of low earning baby dragons, than do that. There is no right answer. It is different for everyone. And quite frankly it can be different for any person on a different day.
